overview Additional Appointments: The Grainger Director of the Rush Arthritis and Orthopedics Institute Associate Chairman, Department of Orthopedics Professor, Departments of Cell & Molecular Medicine and Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology Overview: Dr. Wimmer’s research focuses on the phenomena between interacting surfaces in natural and artificial joints. His research interests have been in joint biomechanics as related to joint health. Early on in his career he started to apply the technical principles of tribology to natural joints in an effort to combine engineering practices with biological tools. In order to comprehend the effects of load and motion on cartilage, several custom apparati were developed that are now in research use worldwide. As such, the custom built equipment is successfully used for tissue engineering and cartilage wear related questions. Next to the Tribology lab, he is also directs the Rush Human Motion laboratory, so Dr. Wimmer has considerable experience in gait and related joint loading. My ORCID is 0000-0001-6169-3873. My Scopus ID is 7103054325. My NIH COMMONS name is mwimmer. Education: Dipl.-Ing. (MS.ME) Technical University of Munich
